I’ve had a few enquiries now from people who love my cakes and want to commission one, but who are then put off by the cost (which is very disheartening for me). So to help you decide if Groovy Cakes will come in on budget I’ve prepared a rough guide of what I’m charging you for:
1. INGREDIENTS: Please remember that ingredients which are free-from and vegan are more expensive than ‘normal’ ingredients. An easy example of this is flour; you can buy 1kg of normal self-raising flour from Lidl for 17p, whereas 1kg of free-from flour is £1.70 – that is a cost ten times above a normal bakery. The other ingredients are equally marked up in comparison to their normal counter-parts.
2. QUANTITY: Obviously a smaller cake will cost less than a larger one. The big number cakes are large and take a lot of ingredients, a 20cm round cake has a lot less volume and the charge will therefore not be the same. Remember that if you’re trying to feed twenty or thirty people a decent portion, there needs to be sufficient cake to do so!
3. ACCESSORIES: I can’t hand you over a cake which is loose in a bag; there needs to be stability in the form of a cake board, and cake boards are expensive! Ribbons, edible diamantes, pillars, lights, etc. all cost money too which need to be covered in the price.
4. TIME: The reason the naked cakes on my website are priced as they are is that I don’t spend hours and hours on decorating them. If you want a beautiful fondant wrapped cake with time consuming decorations I will have to price it to account for the amount of time I will spend getting the details painstakingly correct. I charge my time at (roughly) the same price as a good domestic cleaner, but if your cake is so intricate that I will need to devote two full days to it then I’m afraid I need to charge for that time!
If you only have a small budget then I would recommend a minimally decorated or ‘naked’ two layer cake – I’m always happy to pipe a message on the top in chocolate free of charge. If you have a little extra to spend then give me an idea on preferences and let me have the final say on how it looks, as I may not charge for my time if I have an idea I want to try out. The stormy ‘16’ cake was done in this fashion and I charged less than one quarter of its final value despite it taking me two days to complete (everything was painstakingly hand-painted in water icing).
I hope that helps with your decision on whether Groovy Cakes if right for your special event and I look forwards to hearing from you soon.
